KARACHI: City District Government Karachi’s (CDGK) special magistrates have sent 11 sugar retailers to jail while imposed fine worth Rs 100,000 on each for charges of selling sugar at higher price in violation to the orders of the Sindh High Court, which fixed Rs 40 per kg. The special magistrates had conducted raids on various retailers markets on the directives of the District Coordination Officer (DCO) Karachi Muhammad Jawed Hanif Khan. Additional EDO Revenue Matanat Ali Khan had supervised these raids.
The DCO has further issued stern directives to CDGK’s special magistrates not to show any leniency with those who were not observing the fixed price and take strict legal action against them.
It may be recalled that on Thursday, the DCO had convened a exigent meeting with the Association of wholesalers and Association of retailers of the city while Anis Majid and Farid Qureshi represented these delegations respectively.
The meeting had agreed the government would supply sugar to the wholesalers as per their requirements while the retailers would ensure sugar would be sold at Rs 40 per kg.
The meeting had endorsed that the wholesalers would get 1,250 tones of sugar, which they would further, to the retailers for sale at Rs 40 per kg.
However, certain retailers had violated the agreed formula and continued extorting money from the customers.
Meanwhile, this scribe went to various markets looking for sugar but to no avail. In North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad and New Karachi markets, the retailers denied to have any sugar stock available.
In Gol Market, Nazimabad, none of the shopkeepers said he had sugar stock. However, just a single retailer offered just two kgs of sugar at the rate of Rs 70 per kg, which this scribe had to buy for domestic use.
While talking to Daily Times, the DCO regretted retailers’ refusal of having any sugar stocks and he also regretted purchase of sugar at the rate of Rs 70 kg.
“It was mater of shame that the retailers were still confusing the common man and were extorting money while the government had ensured supply of 1,250 tones of sugar to the wholesalers”, regretted the DCO.
If the retailers would not stop this malpractice, there are other ways to address public issues and suggestions were under way to install sugar sale stalls in every nook and cranny in the city so that people should buy sugar at the fixed rates of Rs 40 per kg.
