KARACHI: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has demanded the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Sindh governor and chief minister to put the traffic police under the control of City District Government Karachi’s (CDGK) control so that the traffic problems in city should be solved. He expressed these views while addressing a seminar on “Road Safety” held by Highway and Motorway Police Department on Monday.
Kamal claimed that the Karachi being the only mega city in the world does not have traffic police under the control of local government. The CDGK could do traffic engineering but it doesn’t have the powers for it. Despite the CDGK has spent billions of rupees on traffic engineering, infrastructure development, construction of roads, flyovers and underpasses but the problems were still persisted due to lack of proper traffic management.
Kamal said that we always give the examples of those countries which have strong democratic system but they also have traffic police under the control of local or city government while here in Pakistan we have a mindset for centralization of all powers. Not only we don’t do anything but also restrict others. However, we now have reached at a stage where we have to correct the past mistakes.
Kamal regretted the goods carrier were avoiding using Northern Bypass and if there was any danger for goods carrier at Northern Bypass, Police Kiosks should be established there to make the avenue useable for heavy vehicles.
Kamal further regretted parking of vehicles at the roads in Saddar despite 9 streets have already been declared as ‘NO Parking Zone’. He added that the CDGK had established the Saddar Car Parking Plaza with hefty money but due to non-implementation of rules, vehicles were parked on the streets.
Kamal said that the Highway Police has set up an example of good traffic management and implementation of traffic laws, which could also be implemented in other areas.
Highway and Motorway Police I.G Dr Waseem Kausar Former Police Sindh I G Asad Jehangir, N E D University Prof. Dr Mir Shabbar Ali and Fatima Surrayya Bajia also addressed.
