KARACHI: Local government (LG) system represents people at the grass root level and has ensured resolution of public woes at their doorstep. The LG system also constitutes nursery for the democracy and allows a common man to cast his share for the development and progress of the country.

It is the need of the hour and people demand that the LG system should continue because it has guaranteed rapid and exemplary development in city in particular and around the country in general.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal stated this while addressing a delegation of senior trainee officers from National Management College on Friday.

Kamal said that the LG system was close to people at the grass root level. Henceforth, the elected Nazim has to remain in contact with people of his constituency with a sense of being accountable to them.

The LG system was beneficial to common man due to the fact that it has solved routine problems of people at union council level. Except for a few places exemplary development has happened everywhere with maximum satisfaction to the people, commented Kamal.

In reply to a question, Kamal said that the governments in past could not implement low-cost residential projects for the citizens, which resulted in mushroom growth of spatial settlements in city.

On the other hand, the powerful land mafia had occupied government lands but the CDGK has managed to recover the occupied lands from the illegal occupation of the land mafia. The encroached land at Clifton Beach had been recovered and converted into a modern and beautiful park, said Kamal.

Kamal said that the lack of unity of command in city caused various problems, as there were 13 different agencies in city that have their own precincts and have their separate control in the city at a time. The unity of command was must for the progress of the city.
