“Lack of education is the biggest challenge for the nation”

KARACHI: Oratory is a great art and weapon which effective use could change the destiny of nations and bring a vivid transformation in the lives of people. Referring to Islamic history, he mentioned last sermon of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and fiery speech of Tariq Bin Zayed after burning the boats had influenced the masses and a revolution was brought about in the entire human history. Eminent scholar Obaidullah Baig stated this on the occasion of “Inter Collegiate Bilingual Declamation Contest-2010” held at Defence Authority Degree College (DADG) on Thursday. Baig was the chief guest of the event. Students of more than 20 educational institutions of the city participated in the contest.

Baig termed the illiteracy and ignorance as the greatest of all vices, adding that education was such a great force, which enlightens and empowers people.

The biggest challenge of today was lack of education in masses, which leads to militancy, extremism and obscurantist tendencies in society and the salvation of the nation lies in promotion of education and enlightenment in society, he reminded.

Earlier, DADG Principal, Commodore (retd) Imran Ansari said that development of public speaking skills was an important element at all levels in the education curriculum.
One of the essential qualities for assuming leadership role in the life was the art of public speaking. Henceforth, declamation contests and debates were helpful in inculcating healthy values in the students and developing their mental faculties, he claimed.

In the English declamation, Masooma Maryam of Bahria College secured first position, Saba Fatima of DOW University of Medical Sciences stood second and Sindira Junejo of DADC For Women and Naveed Zaman of SZABIST were jointly declared third.

In the Urdu declamation, Sadaf Bashir of Sir Syed Girls College stood first, Mudassir Majeed of Defence Authority SKBZ got the second position and Nain Tara Leghari of DADC For Women was declared third. Bahria College won the trophy of the Declamation Contest 2010.
